Lubbock Residents to Have More Control Over Their Electricity Provider

Are you tired of paying high electricity bills every month? Do you want more control over your electricity provider?

If you live in Lubbock, Texas, you’re in luck! The city is joining the majority of Texas in the deregulated energy market, which means you will soon have more control over your electricity provider and potentially lower bills.

Before May 2021, Lubbock’s electricity was provided by Lubbock Power & Light from the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) electric grid. However, due to contract terms, Lubbock was facing the costly prospect of building a new power plant for energy generation. To avoid this, Lubbock City Council opted for deregulation and transitioned to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid.

ERCOT is responsible for 90% of Texas’ power grid, and in 2021, 70% of Lubbock was successfully transferred to it. Once the final 30% is transferred, Lubbock will officially be deregulated, giving residents more control over their electricity provider and potentially lower bills.

What does Energy deregulation mean for Lubbock residents?

In a deregulated market, customers can choose their own electricity provider and plan. This encourages competition among electricity providers, which can lead to lower prices for customers. Before deregulation, the government regulated electricity prices, which meant that customers had no choice but to pay the set price. Now, with the power to choose their provider, customers can shop around for the best deal.

Texas used to be entirely regulated, but now over 80% of Texans have the power to choose their provider. This means that if you live in Lubbock, you will soon have the power to choose your electricity provider, just like most other Texans.

How do you choose an electricity provider?

There are many factors to consider when choosing an electricity provider. Some providers offer fixed-rate plans, which means that the price you pay for electricity will stay the same for the duration of your contract. Other providers offer variable-rate plans, which means that the price you pay for electricity can fluctuate depending on market conditions.

You should also consider the provider’s reputation for customer service, as well as any additional fees or charges that may be associated with their service. Be sure to read the fine print before signing a contract to ensure that you fully understand what you’re signing up for.

It’s important to note that even though you may have more control over your electricity provider, your electricity will still be delivered through the same power lines and infrastructure. This means that if there is a power outage or other issue, you will still need to contact your local utility company to report the problem.
